IONIAN ISLANDS

The Ionian group of islands is located in the western  part of Greece and comprises seven principal islands: Corfu, Kefallonia, Zakynthos (or Zante), Ithaka, Lefkada, Kythira and Paxi. These islands are known for their beautiful beaches, their charming villages and their verdant landscapes dominated by olive trees.

Profusion of airports in the region make the Ionian islands an easily accessible destination, with Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefallonia, Kythira and mainland Aktion airport, near the island of Lefkada, all offering excellent arrival points. Ferries and hydrofoils cruise frequently from mainland ports to the islands while large passenger ships on their way to the Italian Adriatic ports, often stop at Corfu.
Kefallonia and Zakynthos are serviced primarily from the Peloponnesian port of Kyllini.

Corfu has seen a colourful past where Greek, Roman, Venetian and French occupations have left their marks, including two forts. Many myths and legends feature Corfu including: Hercules, Homer, Odysseus and Jason with his Argonauts. The town of Corfu is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and this has helped to protect and preserve the architecture and the monuments on Corfu.

Kefallonia is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands and the largest of the group. Located between Lefkada and Zakynthos, it has many sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters.

Zakynthos is the third in size of the islands in the Ionian Sea and the native land of the poet D. Solomos, writer of the Greek National Anthem but also that of St. Denis , Patron Saint of the island. Zakynthos is famous for its lovely beaches the most famous beach of which is Smugglers Cove, also known as Navagio.

Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefallonia boast a great number of excellent hotels, many of which operate all year round. Most hotels on the islands offer convention and congress facilities, while there are a number of tourist agencies catering to all the needs of business travel. New modern conference centres are currently being constructed in Corfu and Zakynthos, which combined with high cultural standards, natural beauty and modern transportation facilities of the islands, place them as one of Greece’s destinations for conference and business related tourism.
